When what was to be a straightforward refurbishment of a third floor 1980’s apartment – new kitchen and bathrooms plus redecoration- planned with Renova came unstuck with the proposed shutdown of a communal heating system, a quick rethink was needed.

This did not faze the Renova team who were able to use their many resources to replan the works for a deep retrofit and installation of an individual air/water heat pump central heating system.

Renova’s thoughtful preplanning and teamwork ensured a streamlined complete refurbishment, bringing a 1980’s built apartment up to a 2020’s fit out and an A2 energy rating.

Hat’s off to all the Renova team, a pleasure to work with, with their calm can do attitude and attention to detail.

Project details

Our clients on this project were downsizing and engaged RENOVA primarily because we take care of the whole project, i.e. the architectural design, technical specification, interior design and construction.

While this was an apartment, it had more in common with a house because it was a large penthouse apartment with a large area of external walls and its own roof. The layout was fixed in place and large scale changes were not possible, though they were not required. All fittings and finishes were showing their age so needed to be updated, but the most pressing issue was comfort. The apartment was built in the 1980’s and only had modest improvements made to it over its lifetime. We needed to upgrade the external envelope to retain heat and keep the cold and draught out. We drylined the exterior walls and insulated the roof, we carried out all airtightness measures to eliminate draught and installed a ventilation system. The heating system was replaced with an air-to-water heat pump. The windows had been upgraded to modern aluclad windows so they did not need to be replaced.

All fittings and finishes were replaced and the apartment was fully decorated to complete the works.
