Hiring Renova to renovate our 1940’s home was one of the best decisions we ever made – every day we look around and find it hard to believe that this beautiful home is ours!

We bought our house in November 2019 knowing it would need renovating. The previous owners had extended it and converted the attic so we didn’t need more floor space but rather we needed an improved layout and a retrofit to make it a warm energy efficient house. We spoke to a number of architects but did not get much traction due to the fact that we were not looking for an extension. A friend of mine came across Renova on Instagram and suggested that they would be worth ringing. So I contacted John and it all began.

Things moved slowly at first due to COVID but this gave us time to get to know our house. We realised just how cold it was during the first winter there and so improving the fabric of the house and installing a heat pump was a priority for us.  From the moment we met John we knew that Renova’s way of working was right for us. Agreeing a budget takes centre stage of the process and everything flows from there. During the design process we were introduced to Sian, Barbara and Paul and from that point there was no going back for us. The design process involves workshops in the Renova offices where our floor pans were agreed, finishes decided on while all the time keeping a close eye on the budget impact. Sian, Barbara and Paul  are professional. knowledgeable, very easy to get on with and full of brilliant ideas! Their calm and good natured way of working made the  design process really enjoyable. Design features like the kitchen picture window, the wooden plinth liners and the sliding door work beautifully and are complemented on by almost everyone who visits our house.

When the build began we met Ger, our site manager, Sean and Gary. To say they were a pleasure to deal with is an understatement. Nothing seemed to phase Ger and he took everything  in his stride while working at a phenomenal pace! His attention to detail was second to none. Ger and Paul rarely raised an issue with us without having a solution already thought out.

The build itself went to plan, which given the problems with supply chains in 2021 / 2022 was an amazing achievement. But that’s all down to meticulous planning. The build took eight months and we had numerous comments from neighbours on how professional and efficient the builders appeared to them. When they handed over our house to us in June it was like stepping into a brand new house. Which effectively it was given they stripped it right back in order to get everything right. We feel extremely lucky to have gone through such a major renovation with very little stress. We would  recommend Renova to anyone considering a renovation – you and your house  will be in the best hands!

Project Details

Our brief on this job was simple. Our clients had a fabulous new home, but it needed to be modernised. The décor was dated, the fittings were tired and above all the house was cold and inefficient. The layout wasn’t ideal, but the house was large enough.

We began by notified our clients of the work involved in a deep retrofit renovation, and the associated costs. Once the budget was agreed Siân took over and designed a revised layout. When that was agreed we both committed to the renovation and made arrangements to get ready for site. Fittings and finishes were selected, technical retrofit specifications were agreed and we prepared a set of working drawings. These design workshops took place at our studio at at RENOVA.

Works commenced on the agreed start date and they went according to plan. The finished house is a modernised version of the new home that our client had purchased a couple of years earlier. It is the equivalent of a newly built house.
